Welcome
The Schuylkill River, in front of the Whitemarsh Boat Club (WBC), is wide, deep, and very beautiful, with two long and straight sections. One straightaway is at least 2,000 meters long, and the other, around the corner, is almost three miles long. Four boats can race side by side along either stretch. The river here is often calm, being protected from the winds by the tall hills of Gladwyne and Lower Merion, even when the lower Schuylkill is covered with whitecaps.
The rapid growth of the sport of rowing has created this need for access to the Schuylkill River, in addition to the access at the historic clubs on Boathouse Row in Philadelphia. Already, there are four high schools and two colleges rowing on the river here. WBC will expand access to the river by adapting and adding to existing warehouses for club use. The property covers three acres and WBC uses the river portion. WBC plans to offer summer Learn-to-Row and
Learn-to-Scull rowing programs and individual memberships.
WBC welcomes newcomers to rowing. It will be a place for individual athletes, from different schools and colleges, to inspire each other through sportsmanship and friendship. WBC will encourage newcomers to join in the traditions of the sport which are already here with these athletes.
